Understanding anxiety, body image, and getting an accurate diagnosis — for expats and internationals
Anxiety test
Anxiety is one of the most common mental health challenges, affecting daily life, work, and relationships. While occasional worry is normal, persistent feelings of anxiety, restlessness, sleep disturbances, or physical symptoms like a rapid heartbeat may indicate an anxiety disorder. The first step toward managing these feelings effectively is a professional psychological assessment and diagnosis.
Since 2009, our team has worked specifically with expats and internationals — where anxiety often arrives tangled up with culture shock, isolation, or the pressure of starting over somewhere new.
What is an Anxiety Assessment?
An anxiety assessment is a comprehensive process conducted by a qualified mental health professional to understand your unique experience. It goes beyond a simple online test to provide a clear, evidence-based diagnosis.
Important Note: While online “anxiety tests” can be a useful starting point for self-reflection, they cannot provide a diagnosis. A professional assessment is essential for an accurate understanding and effective treatment.
Common signs of anxiety
Anxiety doesn’t always look like obvious worry or panic. For many people — especially those juggling the demands of life abroad — it shows up more quietly: difficulty switching off at the end of the day, a constant low-level sense that something’s wrong, trouble sleeping or staying asleep, irritability that feels out of character, avoiding situations that didn’t used to feel difficult, or physical symptoms like a racing heart, tense shoulders, stomach issues, or headaches with no clear medical cause.
These signs can build gradually, which means many people live with them for months or years before recognizing that what they’re experiencing has a name — and that it’s treatable.

The role of Expat Psychologist
Finding the right support:
For internationals and expats, navigating mental health care in a new country can be an additional challenge. Finding support in a familiar language and from someone who understands cultural transitions is crucial for effective care. Expat psychologists are trained professionals who specialize in this area.
We offer:
Assessment and therapy in your language: Conducting sessions in English or other languages to ensure clear communication and comfort.
Cultural Sensitivity: understanding the unique stresses of cultural adjustment, isolation, and living far from a traditional support network. Bridging healthcare gaps: helping you navigate the local healthcare system while providing accessible, culturally aware support. You don’t have to navigate this alone. Effective, understanding help is available.
What happens after an assessment
An anxiety assessment isn’t just about reaching a diagnosis — it’s the starting point for a plan that fits your life. Depending on what we find, this might include cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT), practical strategies for managing day-to-day anxiety, or support in understanding how anxiety interacts with other areas of your life, such as work, relationships, or the adjustment to living abroad.
Many clients are surprised by how much relief comes simply from understanding what they’re dealing with — anxiety that has a name and an explanation is often far less frightening than anxiety that feels random or constant.
