About Marta
My name is Marta, I am a British / Spanish psychologist and psychotherapist providing expat counseling to individuals, students and employees.
I am no stranger to displacement, as the child of expatriate parents and growing up as a third-culture kid in France, Spain, Andorra and the UK. When I arrived in the Netherlands to study my Master’s in Clinical Psychology in 2020, I felt an immediate sense of home and belonging amongst the rich, melting pot of cultures a city like Utrecht brings together.
Of course this did not come without its challenges. Like any person migrating, I had to navigate and process many life changes all at once: Dutch bureaucracy, a new language, new surroundings and the integration of my new identity with my past self. Therapy was a crucial space for me to process and hold all of my shifting, contradictory feelings – excitement, grief, fear and pride in the expansion of my comfort zone, awe and sadness for all the years I lived feeling rootless.
When I completed my Master’s in the Netherlands, I took some time to reflect on the kind of approach I wanted to specialise in. I didn’t know much about humanistic therapy, but I knew I believed that the human condition needs more acknowledgement for its absurdity, contradictions and beauty. And that much of our suffering is rooted in denying and rejecting all our different “parts”. And this brings me to my further training in psychotherapy in the dialogue between psychodynamic and person-centred perspectives.
my training in psychotherapy in the dialogue between psychodynamic and person-centred perspectives.
As a psychotherapist I do not provide just a treatment plans. I provide a safe, therapeutic relationship where together with the client, we can make meaning of whatever is relevant – existential angst, depressive tendencies, or even celebrate good news if that is what is needed. No issue is too insignificant to bring into the therapeutic space
My goal is to provide guidance to people to develop their skills and their strengths in multiple settings’
